  5. Pre-School?

    May 20, 2010, 9:13 am
Are you sending your 4 year old to pre-school? I don't think I am because they know basic colors, most shapes, numbers up to 100, they can write their name and a few other small words such as cat. My 4 year olds are pretty advanced and I don't think they need it. My husband disagrees, saying that they need the social time. They already have social time. We go to play groups, they have friends over, and once a week, we go to a mommy and me group. What are your opinions? Ross...uh ya, preschool is NOT mandatory. And my kids do spend time with other kids, did I not say that before?
  6. Parents of kids 5-8yrs, youre advice will lead me to sucess and happier students! I have no idea what to do!?

I'm a fresh. in college, majoring in elementary ed and am teaching 1st grade CCD once a week. Last year I taught 2nd grade and it was a piece of cake. Not this year! So far it's been complete TORTURE and I'm hoping your advice will help me out. I have 16 kids in a classroom frm 430-550pm and I spend more time trying to get them quiet and to pay attention than anything else. Most of these kids get home from school at 4, are thrown into the car and brought right to my class so I'm sure that has an effect. I have to get through 1 chapter in their lesson book and I do an arts & crafts with them by choice to try and make it not so boring. I've tried changing the seating arrangement, drawing things out on the board instead of just reading, making interactive lessons on my computer (which worked somewhat) but this has only caused more problems (finding new kids to talk to, make fun of my drawings etc) Arg! I understand that it's hard going from school to here, but I have to get through the lessons. Any ideas of how to make the class not so boring and keep them focused? What would help your child? I’ve gotten suggestions about music in the back round, continuing to do the interactive lessons on the computer from my professors and the parents of these kids are no help…? they cant read yet :( and I can't bring in candy. Maybe stickers?
